Statement regarding LockBit claims

Earlier this morning we became aware of tweets from LockBit, the cyber-criminal gang, claiming that they had compromised Darktrace’s internal security systems and had accessed our data. Our security teams have run a full review of our internal systems and can see no evidence of compromise. None of the LockBit social media posts link to any compromised Darktrace data. We will continue to monitor the situation extremely closely, but based on our current investigations we are confident that our systems remain secure and all customer data is fully protected.

A new software and services partnership, between two British companies, will combine human expertise with advanced machine learning technology from Cambridge University. Cyber security consultancy CNS Group will bring its managed service and incident response experience to the next-generation Enterprise Immune System technology pioneered by Darktrace. CNS Group’s emergency response team, all specialists in information assurance, will have access to Darktrace’s advanced, probabilistic approach to breach detection.

The Darktrace Cyber Intelligence Platform (DCIP) analyses all information inside the network and adaptively learns the normal patterns for every user, each device and the enterprise as a whole. Darktrace technology is therefore able to detect behavioural anomalies, such as activity on a data-sensitive area of the network or unexpected decryption, which have not previously been recognized, in real time. CNS’s highly-accredited experts have the experience to put the emerging threats into context, report the intelligence back to their clients’ executive, manage the impact and provide resolutions to the intrusion.

Shannon Simpson, CCO at CNS Group, commented: "We’re always looking for the best ways to deliver our services and recognized a need for more sophisticated and complex detection systems, given the evolving threat landscape. Darktrace have an excellent offering to meet this need and our government accredited team are able to provide the services wrap to control the intrusion and reduce its effect, once unusual activity is detected." He continued: "Through this partnership and service we can provide cutting edge cyber security for organisations with low risk appetites, such as those responsible for critical national infrastructure or industrial control systems."

Dave Palmer, Director of Technology at Darktrace commented: "If our mathematical machine learning finds it, it’s serious and we’ve caught it early, but that doesn’t mean it’s solved. Organisations need experienced security practitioners to apply their brains to containing the problem. CNS Group has a high level of government accreditation combined with a reputation for close collaboration with their clients. Our partnership will allow CNS to offer their clients enhanced peace of mind; knowing that any unknown cyber threats within their network will be detected in real time with our Cyber Intelligence Platform, and analysed to ensure the delivery of the best form of threat mitigation."

CNS Group and Darktrace recognize that early detection and swift resolution of security incidents is often the difference between successfully weathering a security attack, or making the news cycle. Reporting and resolving breaches within a limited timeframe is also included in the EU Data Protection Directive, due to be signed in April 2015, and was mentioned in President Obama’s State of the Union speech. In addition, reporting schedules are expected to be part of the forthcoming Personal Data Notification and Protection Act in the USA.
